I’ve curated the 20 absolute best game design books ranging from graphics to story creation and user experience. This is similar to my top game artbooks post, but instead of concept art books I’ll be covering the technical mechanics of game design for people interested in the whole shebang. Game Programming Patterns is a book we’d obviously only recommend to aspiring game designers who want to break into the industry as a programmer. A unique entry on this list, Game Feel attempts to give readers a look at how game designers create “feel”, the meta-sensation of a player’s involvement with a game.

Perhaps the best thing about this school is the ratio of staff to students, which is roughly 1 to 4. Another thing to note is the cost of tuition is quite high coming in at roughly $43,000 per year for full-time students. Students who attended the School of Cinematic Arts at USC have plenty of degree options including a Bachelor of Arts in Animation and Digital Arts or Interactive Entertainment.

This is a purely technical book covering many concepts with examples to build a strong foundation and help you build games regardless of the genre you select. This thick, somewhat intimidating book is one of the best sources of knowledge when it comes to concepts and methodologies for anything from board games and video games to even sports. Things have changed now that plenty of excellent game design books are around to provide more knowledge of what it takes to create games. On the other hand, it is important to mention that, learning from educational materials is only one side of the coin - the theory. Playing, analyzing both good and bad games and making your own games is the other side of the coin.

If you’re looking for a compendium of video game design then this is the book you need. Most people excel in one area like graphics/art, programming, or writing gameplay mechanics. I would not personally recommend this book for an absolute beginner because it does get challenging. You’ll have to think about the process of game design in great detail and it helps to have already created some games in your spare time. Jesse Schell is the author of this incredible book featuring the best attitudes and questions to ask before building a video game. The Art of Game Design presents over 100 questions to help designers think about the psychology, gameplay, usability, storyline, and what makes a game fun.

There is also a strong focus on collaboration between students while working on projects, which serves to prepare them for actual game studio environments. Students also are tasked with designing and developing a working game level while collaborating with other students. The program prepares graduates for various careers in the gaming industry, including Level Designer, Character Artist, Modeler, Texture Artist, Environmental Artist, and more.

This book provides advice, theoretical frameworks and techniques behind designing immersive virtual worlds covering topics such as worldbuilding, player interaction, and community management. The author’s background is more from the world of academia rather than a practicing game designer who has gone through the trenches of shipping a game hands-on. If you’re not sure where to start I’d recommend an all-encompassing book like Games, Design and Play. But you can find plenty of more specific resources in this list catering to storytelling, animation, and custom interactions for modern gaming. You’ll look at both sides to see which workflows fit best in a studio environment and which concepts often lead to the best final outcomes for players.
